THE TOKYO TAPES (Taken from the latest issue of Classic Rock)
If you've had your appetite whetted by the exclusive Quo track on the covermount CD of this issue (issue 182), get yourself ready for much more Frantic Four action as Universal Records are preparing to re-release several of the group's definitive and hard-to-find recordings. First in the line is a special four-disc box set titled Live!, which pulls together a re-mastered version of the band's celebrated double-concert release of the same name with a Japan-only rarity called Tokyo Quo - from which this month's exclusive cover CD track Rain is taken - plus a third, as yet-to-be-confirmed, previously unreleased live show. To be revealed in May or June, the set will include a replica concert programme and ticket, plus a 40-page hardback book. Long regarded as a jewel in the band's catalogue despite it's rarity, Tokyo Quo was recorded at Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo on November 17th 1976, as the Frantic Four toured their album Blue For You - a little under a month in the wake of a three-night stint at the Glasgow Apollo which spawned the Live! double-set - and released exclusively via Nippon Phonogram the following year. It now fetches large sums on eBay. The track listing runs as follows: Is There A Better Way, Little Lady/Most Of The Time, Rain, Caroline, Roll Over Lay Down, Big Fat Mama, Don't Waste My Time and Bye Bye Johnny. Tokyo Quo has never seen a full release outside of Japan, although the track Is There A Better Way surfaced on the second disc of the box set Rockers Rollin': Quo In Time 1972-2000, which was released in 2001. "We hope to include some bonus tracks, but the record company in Japan is currently rummaging through the vaults to see what exists," explains Universal's Steve Hammonds. Later in the year, Tokyo Quo will be made avaliable separately, including a vinal edition. "The band are fully involved with these re-releases, as is Bob Young (The Frantic Four's tour manager and unofficial fifth member)," Hammonds reveals, adding: "There will also be deluxe editions of the Piledriver and Rockin' All Over The World albums over the coming months."
